"We describe the life of ordinary Chinese people in the context of huge changes": the director Pan Zhiqi about the documentary film Ms. Hu's Garden

The director Pan Zhiqi introduced the film Ms. Hu's Garden participating in the Documentary Film Competition of 47th Moscow International Film Festival.

The main character, Auntie Hu, lives in a poor district of the Chinese mega-city Chongqing.

She collects various wasted things in the city center and creates a heavenly garden installation out of them. Her son, suffering from depression, thinks his mom is "the most stupid on Earth", as she works hard but has nothing. The city grows and their house is included in the demolition program.

Pan Zhiqi: "This film, like my previous one, describes the life or ordinary Chinese people in the context of huge changes. I started making it in 2010 and finished only in 2022. This year Auntie Hu has turned 79 years old, she still lives with her son who has sight problems, but they are quite well off because they have an apartment and a pension provided by the government. When the film was finished, I called on them and showed it to them. And Ms. Hu's son said: "Look what clean home we have now compared to what is shown in the film".
