"We took all figures from Udmurt, Komi and Mansi scriptures and myths": the director Ivan Sosnin about the film Legends from the Past

The director Ivan Sosnin, the producers Yana Smaylova and Ekaterina Kononenko and the actress Aleksandra Babaskina introduced the film Legends from the Past participating in the Russian Premiere competition of 47th Moscow International Film Festival.

In the film, a reporter from Ekaterinburg comes to a village lost in taiga where he hears a strange tale about the Forest Lord. When he returns home, he suddenly starts seeing and hearing this spirit, which asks him to save fantastic creatures. The journalist agrees and, together with his 12-year old daughter who comes to visit him on holidays from Moscow, they set off to the lands almost untouched by the civilization. The journey, which is full of unexpected adventures, will make the father and his daughter closer, as only together they will be able to solve the miracle hidden by our ancestors' legends.

Ivan Sosnin: "All characters in the film were taken from ancient scriptures, myths and legends of Udmurts, Komis and Mansis, we found them with the help of historians and sorcerers. But when we were sketching the characters, we understood that we would not want to scare spectators away, but, on the contrary, to attract them. In real legends, there were quite scary characters, but we left only those, which fit the idea of our film about memories and relationships within a family".

Yana Shmaylova: "We made the film as one solid team from Urals and in Ural region, even in hard-to-reach places, as it was important and of value for us to make the film in real locations. The only thing, we would prefer to have a larger budget to make such a film next time than what we have had this time".

Ekaterina Kononenko: "For us the social impact of the project was important and our motivation paved the right way to characters from myths. Our motives were good and it was important to raise the topic of family, memories, environment, the spirits of Ural supported us in some way".

Aleksandra Babaskina: "All ancient characters are very important and even relate to the modern world. It seems to me fairy tales are good for our life, which cannot be limited to a smartphone. We have the environment where we must develop. And this film shows how important are such qualities as kindness, openness, to an extent, ancient characters tell us about these qualities and their causes in life".
