"We came to film making because of a single fear, that of living just one life": the directors Santa de Santis and Alessandro d’Ambrosi on the film RIP

The Italian directors Santa De Santis and Alessandro d’Ambrosi, and the producer Giuseppe Morelli introduced the film RIP, which is part of the Main Competition of the 48th Moscow International Film Festival.

The main character, a journalist Leonardo, has a reserved and solitary life, earning a living by writing obituaries and keeping a distance from the lives of others and his own feelings. Everything changes when he comes across a group of eccentric and surprisingly vivid ghosts. Among them, he sees his father, but not as he remembers him –unloving and always absent – but as a young and sociable man. Trying to make sense of what is happening, Leonardo finds himself caught up in a series of absurd situations where the past and present begin to intertwine.

Santa de Santis: "Alessandro and I met 20 years ago at the acting school, and it was through this profession that we began working together. We started writing scripts for plays in which we also performed, and then shifted to short film scripts. We made our first short film in 2011, and it won over 100 awards worldwide, and then we decided that perhaps film directing was our calling. We felt that this profession allows us to bring to life the images we ourselves would like to see in films".

Alessandro d’Ambrosi: "We came to acting, and later to screenwriting and directing, driven by a single fear, that of living just one life. Our film also explores this topic, the desire to experience the lives of others emotionally and through our senses, beyond our own lives, by recreating them in our work. We create the reality we want to share with people".

Giuseppe Morelli: "After we show this film at festivals, we plan to make an entire series so we don’t stop at just one episode but can explore other stories on this topic".
