"I read a book of memories by Pavel Klushantsev and thought why I had not paid attention to this genius before": the director Mikhail Arkhipov about the film Planet

The director Mikhail Arkhipov, the producer Aleksander Kotelevsky and the actor Sergey Gilev intorduced the film Planet participating in the Main Competition of 47th Moscow International Film Festival.

In August 1960, Nikolay Berentsev, a film director, prepares to shoot a large-scale sci-fi film about an expedition to Venus. While he invents a fantastic planet, he starts to doubt if spectators need his film. Why all these dreams about space when there are so many unsolved problems on Earth? The film is dedicated to the Soviet cinematographer, script writer and director Pavel Klushantsev considered to be a pioneer of the sci-fi genre in global cinema.

Mikhail Arkhipov: "I am a film expert by background and my master in the Institute of Film and Television Oleg Kovalov presented me a book of memories by the director of the film Planeta Bur Pavel Klushantsev titled V Storone ot Bolshykh Dorog (Away from the Big Roads). I read it and thought why I had not paid attention to this genius before, and since then I had had the idea to make a film dedicated to Klushantsev. First, I came up with a documentary in which we tried to recreate some of Klushantsev's technical methods, and some of the frames became the base for the film Planet, which we presented at the pitching session and received financing for a full-length debut".

Alexander Kotelevsky: "This is a complex film from the production perspective and this is a debut with a limited budget. But such films appear when the whole team wants to make them: here we all worked with self-devotion to make a good film. It was difficult for us though: we shot some scenes in Dahab and also had to build a pavilion in the cinematographer's garden, as we could not afford many things due to budget constraints, but, finally, we could get through all these difficulties together".

Sergey Gilev: "I and the director decided that I must play an intelligent person, such an intelligent one that we all must believe we have never meet someone like this. So, in the screen it might appear he does not change even in the most challenging situations. But, overall, I like when a person seems not to show any reaction even to the most irritating circumstances".
