"This story hit me at 100 per cent": the participants of the Short Film Competition on their films

The participants of the Short Film Competition of 47th Moscow International Film Festival shared on their films and the thoughts they had working on their films.

The film Born to Fly tells a story about a school, in which Jeongbeen studies and which forces students to be at the same level in pursuit of society’s ideals. Being an exemplary student, one day only he decides to express his individuality and his performance gets worse at once. Will the character be able to finish this school and find his path in life?

The director of the film Born to Fly Lee Byoungdon: "In my film, I wanted to tell about the educational system of the Republic of Korea and the challenges our students are facing and, I am sure, so do guys from other countries. In the final scene, I wanted to ask spectators a question: "Are you ready to stand against the system?" And to express myself with an answer".

The main character of the film Bumblebee Álex tries to understand what place he has in this world, how courageous and caring he is and what strange sounds his grandpa is making when he sleeps. Lucia has been blind since birth. She guides Álex.

The director and script writer of the film Bumblebee Fon Cortizo: "First I wanted to make a documentary short film about my granddad who passed away at the age of 102 and during his last days was disturbed by some sounds in his sleep. But when the granddad passed away, I realized I still wanted to make a feature film exploring not only my personal experience but also, generally, reflections about mourning, a person's passing away and the responsibility for those loved ones who need care after such a departure".

Based on Georgiy Daneliya's novel, the film Tango tells a story about Oleg, an architect, who goes to a provincial town on business and meets a girl, Tanya. They fall in love at first sight, and it seems they have a long and happy life ahead.

The director of the film Tango Fedor Malyshev: "Georgiy Daneliya's story turned out to be very much like my own life and I accidentally told our producers about it, and they told me at once that we needed to make a film. This story hit me at 100 per cent, because I am sure that if a film does not want to tell about something personal, then why it even exists?"

The film After Father tells a story about an overheard conversation of the parents when Ayda accuses her mother of her father’s death from heart attack. As a result, the atmosphere at home gets unbearable for Ayda's mother and brother.

The director of the film After Father Noushin Meraji: "My film is very much personal and here I reflected my feelings, which I experienced after my father's death. And it seems to me that in a short film setting I could tell this story in a concise way".

The main character of the film Lime is Carlos who parks his car in reverse, as quickly as possible, leaves the car with a bag and opens the door of his house with keys. But he does not enter. He closes the door again and rings the bell. One, two times. Until a 15-year-old boy goes out. Together, they will do what no one wants to do: to bury their dog.

The director of the film Lime Santiago Dulce: "The film's script is based on a story by Leandro, and our personal experience. I remember how my father once told me he would no longer live with my mother. And then he came to our house not as the one who lives there, but almost as a stranger".

The film Coming out of Age tells a story about a teenager who roams down the streets until twilight before his father's funeral, he skateboards, listens to music and drinks trying to soothe the grief and cope with his emotions.

The director, script writer and producer of the film Coming out of Age Shida Li: "I wrote a part of the script of this film after my father's death and in a short film I wanted to show this complex story. In the Chinese culture, it is improper to talk about it, that's why in the film, mourning loved ones and family is more like a background".

The film About the Cow tells a story about the unlucky Moscovite Shezhana who comes to her village to organize the funeral of her stepfather and to inherit his house. There is no money for the funeral, and she decides to sell the cow.

The director Nikolay Alexeev: "Russian cinema is developing, for example, Anton and I have produced the full-length film Ostrov Yuryeva where the main character travels from Vladivostok to Moscow". And I hope we will make not only short films going forward.

The director, script writer Anton Simukhin: "The main character of our film is a 38-year-old nail master who also gets pregnant. I understand that we do have touch points, but even in this case there are common features".
