"The film largely highlights just how vulnerable elderly people are in our society": the director, actor and producer Daniel Guzmán about the film The Redemption

The director, producer and actor Daniel Guzmán introduced the Spanish-Romanian film The Redemption, which is part of the Main Competition of the 48th Moscow International Film Festival.

The film tells the story of 47-year-old Lucas and 86-year-old Antonia, who live together in an apartment in the city center. Their lives go on as usual until an investment fund buys the building to turn it into tourist apartments. Lucas tries to raise the funds needed to avoid losing his home, but one wrong decision changes the course of their entire future.

Daniel Guzmán: "Finding the actress to play Antonia was quite difficult and it took two years to find her. I looked for her on the streets of Madrid, in medical centers, senior activity centers, and nursing homes, and finally found a wonderful non-professional actress. It was important to me that she was around 90 years old and a non-professional actress, because I wanted to show the vulnerability and fragility of this senior age. The film largely highlights just how vulnerable our elderly relatives, and elderly people in our society in general, are. Since I also make social films, it is important for me to show reality for what it is, but to blend it with artistic fiction so that spectators, on the one hand, see what is around us in real life, and on the other, remain slightly unattached from it in to grasp the idea of the film".
