"It was hard to find a 600-kilo actress": the director Miguel Llorens about the film Cowgirl

The film tells the story of Empar, a 67-year-old farmer who lives alone in her house in the Els Ports region. To save the family farm, Tona, her last cow, must give birth. But all Empar’s efforts are no good, so she decides to ask Bernat, her former lover and the owner of the largest farm in the area, for help. The happy news about Tona’s pregnancy is overshadowed by the veterinarian’s warning of a high risk to her health and that any stress could kill her. From that moment on, Empar does whatever it takes to ensure her cow is not disturbed, even if it means going against the entire village.

Miguel Llorens: "I made this film together with Cristina Fernández Pintado, whom we shouldn’t forget. She has extensive acting experience, and she was the one working with the actors, while I, because of the tight production schedule, took the function of not only the director but also of the cinematographer. Our main character is a cow named Cinnamon in real life. It took us a very long time to find her, even though we’ve been working with various companies that source animals, but it turned out that finding a 600-kilogram "actress" like that was not easy. She also had to be calm and friendly, because the story takes place in the mountainous region of Valencia, where livestock typically grazes on its own. The locals were a huge help during filming, and thanks to them, we eventually found our main character, she was actually pregnant, by the way, but the birth in the movie is not real – we had to use some cinematic tricks there".
